WHY GEZELLIG?

The Dutch have a special word to describe “cosiness”, “comfort”, but it’s also something that goes a little beyond that. “Gezellig”. Pronounced correctly, it kinda sounds like you’re clearing your throat, but this blog explores its meaning by documenting experiences that make life richer and deeper; through food, family, and the making of a home.

It’s Easy Being Green

by amanda on October 30, 2013

Can I just talk about my favourite colour for a moment?

If the title didn’t give it away, I’ll go ahead and tell you – it’s green. Not minty green; not chartreuse (a tad too trendy, IMHO) not sage green (I overdid that one many moons ago), but a fun, bright, saturated green.  It’s why I painted our old kitchen cabinets green in the original kitchen, before we built the addition. Specifically, “Iguana Green” by Benjamin Moore. I can honestly say it brought a grin to my face each morning for 2.5 years while it lasted. Okay, so it was the temporary kitchen with a pathetic excuse for counter space, but still.

If I go back to the “idea” pictures I’ve saved over time, you’ll see this recurring theme.

That last picture I only saw after I painted my cabinets! Was happy to find I wasn’t the only one crazy for this colour!

The green I’m liking even more lately has a bit more blue to it (basically just look at my site header to see what I’m talking about); not even sure what you’d call that shade, but its moodiness seems to calm me. Thinking it might be a nice contrast to the yellow in my kitchen?

Did I ever tell you that the green bedroom was the absolute inspiration for our bedroom?? I looked at that picture for MONTHS. It still makes me happy. And found my fabric on Ebay from Uzebekistan because I couldn’t afford the $150m for the real thing!! See? I knew there was a reason I connect with you: it really is easy being green!

I remember when I first spied your bedroom – it almost stopped me in my tracks because I realized we were both inspired by the same photo! Still makes me happy, too…
