WHY GEZELLIG?

The Dutch have a special word to describe “cosiness”, “comfort”, but it’s also something that goes a little beyond that. “Gezellig”. Pronounced correctly, it kinda sounds like you’re clearing your throat, but this blog explores its meaning by documenting experiences that make life richer and deeper; through food, family, and the making of a home.

Tour of Homes

by amanda on November 15, 2013

My lucky in-laws were one of 5 houses hosting the “Tour of Homes” this year. Run by the local Rotary Club, the 5 chosen homes are decorated using local florists and decor stores for Christmas. Then the homes are open to the public who purchase tickets to be able to take a tour of the house.

Because they were involved, they got some free tickets so I got to go! It was an interesting mix of home styles and decor. There were some really great ideas for embellishing fireplace mantels, dining room chandeliers, and porches.

My favourite house was also the fanciest and largest; not for those reasons at all, but the fact that the owners have a minimum of 2-3 pieces of original artwork in each room of their home. All of the artwork has been made by local artists, and the colour schemes of each room are based on the artwork hung there. I was drooling.

In any case, I couldn’t take any pictures to share with you, since this was not allowed on the tour. However, since my in-laws were participating I did get to snap some shots of their house once all was said and done. I could only get there by 5:00p.m. which, sadly, in this part of the world the sun has set this time of year. So the bear with me; natural light was nonexistent and I left my tripod at home!
