The Dutch have a special word to describe “cosiness”, “comfort”, but it’s also something that goes a little beyond that. “Gezellig”. Pronounced correctly, it kinda sounds like you’re clearing your throat, but this blog explores its meaning by documenting experiences that make life richer and deeper; through food, family, and the making of a home.

My go-to shopping place: Kijiji.ca

If you haven’t yet become a huge fan of Kijiji.ca, this is my chance to make you one.

Can’t speak for other parts of the world, but around these parts, if you are looking to sell something or looking to buy something used, this is the place to do it.

Kijiji is an online marketplace that is well-organized, well thought-out, and structured. We have bought and sold countless objects this way over the years.

The most memorable? Well, one year we bought all the kid’s Christmas presents (a still-brand-new-in-the-package toy for the toddler, Lego for the 6 year-old – a set he specifically asked for, and an iPod for the, ahem, want-to-be preteen). We found the farm that we lived in outside Ottawa that way. This year my son is selling his pumpkins there – and he sold two yesterday  he’s sold out!

And it’s so easy to narrow or broaden your search as you need – whether it be by price, location (there’s a nifty little slider so you can select how big a radius you’d like to search around your chosen city), or category.

My only hang-up with it is that people are not allowed to post more than once for an article, but dealers and commercial sellers will routinely post the same articles daily. It bloats the listings and makes searching a bit more onerous. I wish Kijiji moderators would be a little more on top of this.

Today – yippee! – I purchased a tripod via – you guessed it – Kijiji! I looked around at many places; was saddened to see that if I wanted to spend <$100 I would have to buy essentially a heap of plastic; but then found a number of excellent tripods here in London!

Such a great way to clean out that closet or garage.  If you price it fairly (do some research first and see what the current prices are for the item you’re selling), you’ll have no trouble getting rid of it. Find the “Post a free Ad in this category” link at the top right of the page and it’s about as easy to post an ad as it is to find a video of a cat doing something adorable online.  You don’t have to post your phone number, but I find you reach a larger audience this way.

Sooo, what do you guiltily have hidden under your bed that isn’t seeing any use? Or conversely, what’s that one item that you can’t bring yourself to buy because of the price? Tell me in the comments below! Happy hunting.
