WHY GEZELLIG?

The Dutch have a special word to describe “cosiness”, “comfort”, but it’s also something that goes a little beyond that. “Gezellig”. Pronounced correctly, it kinda sounds like you’re clearing your throat, but this blog explores its meaning by documenting experiences that make life richer and deeper; through food, family, and the making of a home.

15 years

This year will be our 15th wedding anniversary. In that span we’ve changed careers, changed cities, moved 4 times and had 3 kids. But in meeting other people and getting to know their lives, I realize this is hardly atypical. Your 30s and 40s are just that period of your life where things happen, time flies, and you need to focus on your happiness and family (not necessarily in that order!)

So we’re planning a small getaway this fall. Nothing that costs an arm and a leg; just a few solid days of spending some time together. We’re leaning towards New York City, but perhaps staying in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn. I feel like there’s a lot of see home-design and graphic-design wise; plus we’ll be a short ride away from Manhattan where the real pulse is.

In starting to look at some places to stay and visit, I`m getting the sense that the industrial-vintage-repurposed look is alive and well in Brooklyn, as is the slow-food/craft-beer movement. I’ve come across these gems:

I’ve started a Pinterest board here.
