WHY GEZELLIG?

The Dutch have a special word to describe “cosiness”, “comfort”, but it’s also something that goes a little beyond that. “Gezellig”. Pronounced correctly, it kinda sounds like you’re clearing your throat, but this blog explores its meaning by documenting experiences that make life richer and deeper; through food, family, and the making of a home.

It’s that time of year: the sap is flowing and we get the benefits! For the third year in a row, hubbie has been tapping trees and making syrup. It’s a great thing to do this time of year; the weather is getting pretty pleasant but you wouldn’t otherwise have any reason to wander outside. […]

With hubby about to (re)launch his market vegetable farm this year, I’m reminded of the year that he did something similar in Ottawa, back in 2008. At the time, he was between high-tech employment, and wanted to confirm whether his dreams of being a farmer were just that, or something more. At the same time, […]

Dialling back a few months: my daughter is naturally a very generous person [insert chest puffed out with pride]. Her most favourite thing about Christmas was the gifts she gave. This year was particularly special because they were homemade – and I’m not talking a reindeer made out of construction paper. With the money she’s […]

Sorry for the awful delay! I can tell you now – we were on a family vacation in Mexico for the month of January. It was wonderful, exciting, stressful, tiring, the way a good vacation should be. I tried my darndest to pick up some usable Spanish and once in a while, I was successful! […]

I don’t know about your house, but last week has been a series of illnesses, obligations, and teary outbursts (from both me and the kids). But now that the actual day is so nearly upon us, things are finally calming down and everyone’s settling into the things that matter: family and togetherness. Wishing all the […]

My lucky in-laws were one of 5 houses hosting the “Tour of Homes” this year. Run by the local Rotary Club, the 5 chosen homes are decorated using local florists and decor stores for Christmas. Then the homes are open to the public who purchase tickets to be able to take a tour of the […]

I have an embarrassing confession. I’m a lousy self-starter. Back when I was young enough to be in school and actually knew other people who were as well, when people moaned about writing their master or doctorate thesis they’d always say “I LOVED the research and experimentation part. But the write-up? UGH. THAT I could […]

Celebrating end of summer with a beach picnic in Port Stanley, Ontario

09.09.2013
Port Stanley, Ontario

Our family isn’t big into the “pitch-a-shade-and-stay-for-6-hours-at-the-beach” kinda thing. We prefer a quick escapade for a couple of hours – have a picnic, let the kids dip in, and come back home before everyone gets heat stroke. We are fortunate enough to live a mere 10 minutes from Port Stanley, Ontario and so have the […]
